The supreme legislative body of the Altai Republic is the State Assembly – El-Kurultai of Altai Republic - a permanent body of representative government. The main function is the preparation and adoption of legislative acts on all issues within the competence of the Republic of Altai.
41 deputies are elected to the State Assembly (El - Kurultai). Among deputies permanent committees are formed to conduct legislative work, monitoring the activities of state bodies, enterprises, institutions and organizations.
Between sessions of the State Assembly its work is organized by the Presidency, headed by the Chairman of the State Assembly.
The highest executive body of the Republic of Altai is the Government of the Republic of Altai, which is headed by the Chairman of the Government of the Altai Republic. The Government of the Altai Republic is accountable to the State Assembly.
The republic consists of 10 district municipalities and the capital - town Gorno-Altaisk. In the Altai Republic, there is a vertical governance structure - in each district and the town Gorno-Altaisk governance is carried out by municipal administrations.
